Italian Upstart Snapping at the Heels of Champagne

Champagne is so distinguished that it doesn’t have to follow the French law of declaring its appellation on its label.  The name alone suffices.

So it is with an Italian sparkling wine under the Italian wine classification system.  Of all Italian wines only one does not have to declare its DOCG appellation on its label because its name alone guarantees quality.

The Franciacorta region in northern Italy may not boast much of a history but it is fast being acknowledged by wine experts such as Tom Stevenson, UK wine writer and one of the world’s leading experts on Champagne, as producing Italy’s best sparkling wine and an area to watch closely in the future.
